If you’ve ever had to travel during the early morning you know that one of the most important things to bring with you is a nice big cup of coffee. Sure, you can purchase one while you’re on the road, or make a cup at home to take with you when you leave, but how long will it last? Even on cold mornings when you have the heat blasting in your car, it’s hard to keep a cup of coffee hot and fresh.
It might be time to invest in an insulated travel mug for your coffee. They make it much easier to keep coffee fresh on the go, and they have the bonus of reducing your carbon footprint – no more Styrofoam coffee cups from Starbucks for you! But finding the right mug can be very hard in today’s market.
That’s why I’ve already found five of the best insulated coffee travel mugs for you and reviewed them right here!
Features To Look Out For When Choosing An Insulated Travel Mug
But before that, you need to consider what you’re looking for in an insulated travel mug. How big should it be, what should it be made of that creates the best insulation, should it have a handle or a straw to make it easier to drink on the road – and if it has a handle, how well would it fit in your cup holder?
Personally, this is what I would go with: a coffee mug between twenty and thirty-two ounces, so you get more coffee on the go. Having stainless steel on the interior makes it easier to clean and keeps the most heat or cold in. Lastly, while a handle is better for holding, it would make it very hard to keep it in a cup holder in the average car, so I would go without.
I would also, however, suggest a travel mug with a straw in order to make it easier to drink without risking tipping the mug too far and spilling hot liquid while also providing less distraction from the road.
If the features I mentioned above aren’t your typical cup of coffee, don’t worry, I’ve got a little something for everyone on this list!
Our first mug is a X-PAC 64oz Tumbler with a lid included. It is a whopping sixty-four ounces, ten inches tall, and over a pound in weight, making it a very large and slightly heavy travel mug to take on a trip.
Its camo design makes it ideal for a camping trip, and it is made of stainless steel to guarantee that hot drinks stay piping hot and cold drinks stay so cold the ice in them doesn’t melt. Despite its size, it can fit most average car and truck drink holders with a four-inch base. The lid that it comes with claims to be tight enough to prevent any spilling.
On the positives, it’s a big mug, so it will get you enough to drink while you’re out and about. The double wall is meant to prevent your hand from becoming too hot or cold while holding the mug, with stainless steel perfect for insulation. A no-spill lid is a must have for traveling as well, in my opinion.
As for the negative, it is big. Not many people want a mug that large and heavy. There are also not many people who would want to have a camo design on their mug, which is something to consider if you plan on using it every day. Lastly, there is no straw or handle, which can be a big downer for some drinkers.
The Simple Modern 32oz Cruiser Tumbler Travel Mug is also double walled, with a straw and a closable lid. It comes in twenty-two, thirty, and thirty-two-ounce sizes, with two plastic straws and a flip lid that when closed creates a splash-proof seal. Made of stainless steel and coated with copper, it’s original intent as a water bottle can be expanded to include any hot or cold drink you want!
It fits most car cup holders and comes in a wide variety of colors.
Our pro list includes it’s large size and ability to still fit in a cup holder, so you get a nice big drink that you can set down in your car easily – and you can choose a smaller size if that suits you better.
The use of copper increases the likelihood of a hot or cold drink staying at the perfect temperature for longer, and two straws means you can drink easier on the go and replace a lost or damaged straw with ease. The multitude of colors and styles it comes in makes it possible for all kinds of people to enjoy their drink in style.
On the other hand, the lid is mentioned only as splash-proof, not spill-proof. You’ll likely have to handle it with care to keep from getting hot coffee on your pants as you drive. This mug also has no handle, which can be a downside for some especially when there’s a risk of a spill depending on the way you hold your cup.
While it can keep cold drinks cold for a good half a day or longer, it only keeps hot drinks warm for about four hours.
The Atlin Tumbler 30oz Travel Mug is 100% stainless steel with a double wall and clear lid and comes with a handle and a straw. It is listed as BPA free, dishwasher safe, and even has a cleaning brush and a second lid – one lid for when you use the straw, and another simply to cover your drink if you aren’t planning on drinking it for a while.
It’s not quite eight inches, and fits in most standard cup holders. It comes in a few different colors, like orange, white, black, and blue.
This is the first cup on the list with a handle and a straw that can also fit in a cup holder! Providing a cleaning brush and the reassurance that it is safe to put in the dishwasher makes cleaning this cup very easy. It’s size and height makes it a great travel mug to take in to work or while on the road. Even without the handle, this mug is designed to be easy to hold onto.
Which is a good thing, because there is no mention of a seal at all! Neither lid is mentioned as preventing spills or splashes, so be careful when handling this mug in the car. The colors it comes in are also not varied much, making for a rather uninteresting looking mug to some.
It can keep cold drinks cool for a full day, but only keeps hot drinks warm for about six hours – this can be a positive or negative, depending on how long you want to keep your drink around for.
The 20oz Stainless Steel Double Walled Mug from Drinco has a spill-proof lid and is BPA free. It comes in the color purple, pink, black, and blue, and has a finish that makes it easy to grip. It fits in most cup holders, and there is a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
It claims to be sweat-free on the exterior in addition to preventing any heat or cold from escaping to the outside, which would be great for hot days when you want a cold drink that won’t slip out of your fingers. The lid is spill-proof, and the cup itself is free of toxins, which is always a bonus. It’s also easy to grip and store because of its small, sleek design.
This cup, however, has negatives that far outweigh the positives. It is the smallest cup on this list at only twenty ounces. It comes in a few colors that are mostly considered “girly,” making it a hard sell for most adult men. There is no mention of how long it keeps drinks hot or cold, and has no straw or lid, nor any other features that make it easier to use.
The Beast 20oz Tumbler has all the bells and whistles – a lid, two different straws, a cleaning brush, and even a gift box for if you decide to give the gift of a nice travel mug to a friend. The straws, like the tumbler, are stainless steel, with one completely straight and the other bent at an angle.
It fits in standard cup holders and is BPA and toxin free, with an easy-grip, rust and scratch-free design. It comes in a variety of colors and has a satisfaction guarantee.
This travel mug has little to complain about – it’s splash-proof, toxin free, easy to clean with a brush, comes with two stainless steel straws and fits in most cup holders. It’s easy to grip and comes in styles and colors that everyone can enjoy.
There are a few potential issues, however – like the previous travel mug, it is small at 20oz, and there is no mention of how long it can keep a drink hot or cold.
And the Winner Is…
With all things considered, the best travel mug on this list would have to be the Atlin 30oz stainless steel tumbler. It’s a good size, keeps hot drinks warm for the longest amount of time listed, is toxin-free and dishwasher safe, and comes with both a straw and a handle for easy gripping and drinking. Just keep in mind that there’s little mention of it being spill-proof!
The Runner Up!
The second best travel coffee mug on this list would have to be the Beast 20oz stainless steel tumbler. It comes with multiple straws and a cleaning brush. It’s also BPA and toxin free and fits in most cup holders.
It’s a bit disappointing that it has no handle, but the real reason it got beat out for first place is because it’s so small! 20oz is just a bit too small for most people who want their coffee to last the whole morning.
So there you have it! Not only have you seen what it takes to choose a great coffee travel mug, but you’ve also watched the process in action and hopefully found a good mug to use in the future for your next trip! Just keep in mind what you want, and go out there and find it.
